Setting SMART goals is an excellent way to focus social media efforts. Creating goals for the month or quarter enables a business to dial down on messaging and measure if it is making an impact. Set aside some time to brainstorm the social media goals for the next month. Next, look at the goals to see if they meet the criteria below.
Specific Social Media Goals
I want more Facebook followers. Yep, that’s a start but it is not specific enough. What about this goal? I want to increase my Facebook followers by 500. Alternatively, I want to increase the signups for my newsletter coming from Facebook by 50%. They are both specific goals.
Measurable Social Media Goals
You can use your Facebook and Instagram analytics to see new followers. To track a goal you need to have the data from when you started working on it. Create a spreadsheet with all the data that you want to track and input the data from regular check-ins along the way. This allows you to make changes as you go. Don’t forget to make note of times that strategy changed so that you can analyze if the changes made a difference.
Achievable Social Media Goals
Set achievable goals. I will have 1M new followers in the next month isn’t realistic. How many new follows do you typically have in a month? Take that number and decide on a reasonable increase.
Relevant Social Media Goals
How can social media help your business goal? 500 random new followers will not help you spread the message about your business. 200 new followers that are in your target market and engage with your posts are all potential buyers. You find them through relevant messaging. What are they interested in? What is important to them? This is where you find inspiration for your content.
Time-bound Social Media Goals
When you set your goals, make sure to include a date. For instance, I will have 500 new followers by the end of Q1 is a time-bound goal. Setting a time limit is so important for accountability.
